Project Overview
The primary goal of this project was to completely revitalize a residential community that was located at the rear of an industrial complex. This community had served as a Section 8 housing project for years, and the landscape had become severely overgrown, to the point where many buildings were obscured by vegetation. The soil conditions were poor, contributing to the overall neglected appearance. Additionally, the office lacked any distinguishing features, blending into the surroundings and failing to provide a sense of welcome. The community as a whole felt tired and in need of significant renewal.
Project Location
This project was located in Fort Walton Beach, positioned at the rear of an industrial complex. The area presented a contrast between the industrial surroundings and the residential community, requiring thoughtful design to enhance the living spaces.
Scope of Work
The landscape elements designed and constructed for this project included pavers, pottery, water features, fire features, concrete, artificial turf, and Canary Island palm trees. These elements were carefully selected to transform the space and create a more inviting and aesthetically pleasing environment for the residents.
Design Inspiration
This project presented a unique challenge due to its outdated condition, with the original buildings featuring breeze block in the common areas and lacking any amenities, not even a pool. The client's vision was to bring in a mid-century design aesthetic while addressing the flat roofs over the front door stoops. Additionally, the property had been built in two phases, with the second phase appearing more modern compared to the older concrete block structures. The design needed to unify these contrasting elements through cohesive landscape and artwork, creating an attractive and functional environment for the residents.
Highlight Features
A standout feature of this project is the custom pond with a paver deck, centered around a unique water and fire feature, creating a captivating focal point. The surrounding area was modernized with artificial turf, circular designs, and new sidewalks. To unify the old and new buildings, the entire property was re-landscaped, blending the contrasting architectural styles. Pottery and artificial plants were installed on the flat roofs in front of each building, adding a distinctive aesthetic. Additionally, tile work was incorporated in the corridors behind the breeze blocks, introducing a Spanish feel to the property. Strategically placed Canary Island Date Palms added a regal and stately presence throughout the landscape. Combined with thoughtfully positioned artwork, these elements brought the entire community together, creating a cohesive and unified environment.
Materials Used
The materials used in creating the hardscapes and landscape features included pavers, water features, fire features, magnificent palm trees, artwork, sculptures, and artificial turf. These materials were chosen to enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space, blending natural and artistic elements throughout the landscape.
Outcome
The completed landscape transformed the space into a vibrant and inviting community that exceeded the client's goals. The outdated and neglected environment was revitalized with modern design elements, creating a cohesive blend between the old and new buildings. The addition of water and fire features, as well as the strategic placement of palm trees and artwork, elevated the property's value and aesthetic appeal. The use of artificial turf and re-landscaped areas provided a fresh, clean look, while the tile work and pottery
